  • Bravecto + heartworm med: $332–480 per year.

What Should I Check When Buying Halloween Costumes?

More common a question than you'd think. People assume costume quality is obvious. It's not. I've audited products that looked premium in the catalog and fell apart in my hands. My quick checklist for friends:

On paper, final inspection looked like a reasonable safety net. Purchasing decisions made on unit price alone. In 2022, when I implemented our current verification protocol, we received a batch of 500 parts where the spec was visibly off. Specified tolerance was ±0.5mm; delivered parts were at ±2mm. The vendor claimed it was "within industry standard." It wasn't, and we rejected the batch. They redid it at their cost, which they didn't love. But the alternative—assembling 500 out-of-spec parts into customer systems—would have cost far more than the redo. That quality issue cost us a $22,000 redo and delayed our launch by three weeks.

Now every contract includes first-article inspection and measurable tolerances. The total cost of a bad part isn't the part itself. It's the assembly, the field failure, the replacement crew, and the damaged customer relationship—or rather, the part itself is the smallest line item.

"Lewis Wife" — and Other Mystery Search Queries

This one I can't help with. "Lewis wife" gets forwarded to me as a joke sometimes—people assume I can interpret anything, including ambiguous search queries. I don't know what it refers to. Neither, apparently, does the searcher.

But it's a genuine quality lesson: ambiguous requirements are the enemy. If a spec can be read three ways, it's a bad spec. I send vague requirements back to engineering until they're unambiguous. Same logic applies to search terms, crossword clues, and instructions. Without context, quality is undeterminable.

It's also a reminder of boundaries. I can only speak to my domain. If you're dealing with something outside industrial quality and B2B purchasing, there are probably factors I'm not aware of. That's not a disclaimer—that's how honest evaluation works.
