The Equipment Trio: A Quality Inspector's Guide to Choosing the Right Package

They don't.

What matters here is service response time, not the brand sticker. A 2% difference in throughput won't matter when a Friday shutdown costs you a weekend of production. We had a customer accept a machine that was 99% to spec, but the control panel layout had been rearranged. The vendor called it "minor." The operator had spent 12 years reaching for the stop button in one spot. That's not minor.

The numbers said go with the cheaper replacement. My gut said the service agreement was too vague. I went with my gut. The cheaper unit failed during commissioning, and the service crew took four days to arrive. Mental note: if you can't get a written response-time commitment, that's a red flag.
